If Congress can’t pass some sort of government funding bill by September 30, then the federal government will enter into a shutdown for the first time since 2019. And thanks to the filibuster, which requires most bills to get 60 votes in the Senate in order to pass, Senate Democrats will have to play a role in any funding deal that makes it to the president’s desk.

New Jersey’s two senators, Cory Booker and Andy Kim, are saying that their votes can’t be taken for granted to prevent a shutdown. If Republicans put forward a bill that doesn’t involve any input from Democrats and would, from their perspective, harm New Jersey and its residents, both senators signaled that they’re willing to use their power to stop it.

“I am not going to support a budget that hurts New Jerseyans, that hurts people more than they’re hurting already,” Booker told reporters during a gaggle that he later posted online. “Donald Trump and Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House. They have a responsibility to put forward a budget that can get through the United States Senate.”

If Trump tries to “bully” the Senate into passing a partisan bill, he added, “I’m going to block it and I’m going to fight to prevent him from doing that.”

Kim told the New Jersey Globe today that he feels similarly: “Let’s just say there’s no way I’m going to vote for something that’s purely partisan on the Republican side, and let that go through,” he said. “I’m prepared to do what I did the last time around.”

The “last time around” refers to a similar fight in March, when Republicans pushed through a controversial year-long stopgap bill and essentially dared Senate Democrats to block it. Booker and Kim both voted against the bill alongside most of their fellow Democrats, but a critical handful Democratic senators – including Minority Leader Chuck Schumer – supported it and averted a shutdown.

Republicans are discussing the possibility of another stopgap bill, and House Republicans have also been working through a series of strongly partisan appropriations bills that have drawn fierce opposition from Democrats. But some Republicans in the Senate have been more amenable to a traditional bipartisan funding process, in defiance of the Trump administration, and Kim said that’s the outcome he still hopes prevails.

“If the Republicans are going to refuse to do bipartisanship, that’s going to be a real problem here,” Kim said. “They’re the ones that are breaking precedent if Trump continues to push them in this extremely dangerous way. We’ll see how it goes, but I’m really trying to make sure that we try to get something that’s bipartisan through.”

New Jersey’s nine House Democrats, too, are likely to push back on any partisan GOP funding process. But without an equivalent to the filibuster, they don’t have the same power to stop the Republican majority from doing whatever it wants to do; just today, every present Democrat voted against an Energy Department appropriations bill, but it still passed 214-213. (New Jersey Rep. Mikie Sherrill, notably, was not in attendance for the vote amid her campaign for governor.)

Hoboken mayoral candidate Emily Jabbour launched a digital ad on Thursday, according to an announcement.

Jabbour highlights her founding of a gun violence prevention group in Hoboken and her work expanding youth programs in the city as a councilwoman. The release did not specify how much money would back the ad.

Jabbour’s opponents include Councilman Michael Russo, Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher, Councilman Ruben Ramos, and Dini Ajmani, a former deputy assistant U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under President Joe Biden and assistant State Treasurer under Gov. Phil Murphy.

Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla is all but guaranteed to win a 32nd district seat in the General Assembly come November.

On Tuesday, Jabbour announced she was endorsed by Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, one of the country’s most significant gun violence prevention groups. The announcement states Jabbour helped draft and pass the city’s municipal safe gun storage ordinance. She was first elected to the Hoboken Council in 2017.

Script:

“I watched an active shooter drill at my daughter’s school. That changed me forever. I got involved. Listened. And founded our chapter of Moms Demand Action. We made progress and helped reduce gun violence. Then I ran for City Council. We expanded youth programs to bring crime down and make our streets safer. I’m Emily Jabbour and I’m running for mayor. And I’ll keep listening and getting results to keep Hoboken safe and moving forward.”

Mikie Sherrill has picked up the endorsement of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 21 in her bid to become New Jersey’s next governor.

“Working New Jerseyans are tired of seeing their bills become more expensive and their paycheck stay the same,” said Bernie Snyder, Business Manager/Secretary-Treasurer of IUPAT District Council 21. “In times like these, workers need a governor who will stand with them in the fight for higher pay, a safe workplace, and their right to unionize. Congresswoman Sherrill has taken the fight to Washington for workers, and she will do the same in Trenton as governor.”

The painters’ union has about 1,800 members in New Jersey.

Tim Crowther, the union’s political director, said he was confident that Sherrill will be “a true advocate for working families” if she wins.

“Mikie Sherrill has demonstrated a clear understanding of our members’ challenges and shown a commitment to advancing labor rights and protecting good union jobs,” he said.

Sherrill has already been endorsed by the New Jersey State Association of Pipe Trades, the New Jersey State Council of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART),  the  United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) Locals, and 1199SEIU since July.

Samantha Maltzman, one of the Democratic Party’s most prolific and connected fundraisers, is joining the advisory board of Mercury Public Affairs, an influential public affairs firm.

Maltzman has spent two decades raising money for presidential, U.S. Senate, House, and gubernatorial campaigns, and brings Mercury a significant stable of contacts.

She has served as the finance director for Hillary Clinton’s New Jersey presidential campaign in 2008, as well as for U.S. Senators Cory Booker, Frank Lautenberg, and Bob Menendez, and Rep. Rush Holt (D-Hopewell).   Maltzman was the deputy national finance director for Booker’s campaign for the Democratic presidential campaign.   She also helped Gov. Phil Murphy in the early days of his 2017 campaign for governor.

“Samantha is one of the most respected and accomplished fundraisers in politics. Her decades of experience at the highest levels of campaigns and her unmatched relationships will bring enormous value to our firm,” said Michael Soliman, a Mercury partner who heads their New Jersey operation. “We are proud to welcome her to Mercury’s Advisory Board and look forward to the insight and expertise she will bring as we continue to expand our reach.”

Another Mercury Partner, Mo Butler, calls Maltzman “a trusted strategist to some of the most prominent leaders in the country.”

“Her record speaks for itself, and she will be an incredible asset to Mercury as we continue to grow,” he said.

Maltzman had spent about fourteen years raising money for Menendez, including his legal defense fund following his 2023 indictment on federal corruption charges.
